Welcome to vulcanhammer.net! This site is a comprehensive resource for geotechnical engineers, foundation contractors and foundation equipment specialists on driven piles and other topics of interest in deep foundations. It's actually three sites in one:

  • Geotechnical and Marine Downloads, the most popular feature of the site, where you can obtain information and software on a wide variety of topics relating to geotechnial and marine engineering and construction.
  • The Wave Equation Page for Piling: The oldest portion of the site, started in 1997, this is both an information source and a forum for topics related to the one dimensional wave equation as it is applied to piling. This has been an ongoing topic of research, experimentation, application and commercialization since 1931, although it was not until the early 1960's that real progress began on applying the theory to practice. Today the wave equation is applied both to the capacity and drivability prediction of impact-driven piles and to the in situ monitoring of piles during installation. However, many engineers, equipment manufacturers, owners and in some cases the practitioners themselves are unaware of some of the complexities related to the application of stress wave theory to piles. This page will hopefully advance the dissemination of this knowledge and perhaps the application itself.
  • Geotechnical Courses: The presentation slides and other material from two university level courses on soil mechanics and foundations. Related to this feature is the textbook Soils in Construction.

We also have our "general resources" including the following:

  • a search engine at the bottom of each page to find information; and
  • an overview of our services.

The Wave Equation Page for Piling

The Wave Equation Page for Piling was started in July 1997 for the purpose stated above: to furnish both a forum and an information source on the application of one dimensional wave theory to practical application for driven piles. It has become a popular destination for those seeking information on this subject, especially information not disseminated for strictly commercial purposes. The international flavour of its visitors speaks both of the widespread interest in this topic and in the ability of the Internet to meet the need.

Vulcan Iron Works Site

The establishment of a website for the longest running manufacturer of pile driving equipment was discussed as early as 1995. The following year Vulcan was merged into a subsidiary of Cari Capital Company and discussions re-emerged. By 1998 it was clear that the company itself would not be putting forth such a site. In May 1998 the Wave Equation Page for Piling began a section on Vulcan Iron Works Inc. In April 1999 this section was moved from the Wave Equation Page to paid hosting. The domain name vulcanhammer.com was added in January 2000, and changed to vulcanhammer.net in May 2001. In October 2007 the information on vulcanhammer.net was moved to vulcanhammer.info.

Geotechnical Courses

The geotechnical courses were first added when the webaster taught Soil Mechanics and Foundations at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. All of the courses the webmaster has taught there are available, including the presentation slides and other information.
